“Morana & Vesna” by Ivana Rezek – via Wikimedia Commons –
Tis the season for Morana – the Goddess of winter. I was much more familiar with her when I lived in NY. Here in Phoenix she doesn’t bring cold, just dark. I am sinking into the dark, thinking about my ageing, sinking into the dark, resting from the activity of the frantic summer. Though Morana is frightening, dark and cold (another face of Jaba Baba?) she is also meditative and restful. I’m walking from the train to work under a crescent moon and Venus and Jupiter.
I’m not sad and I’m not thinking of dark like evil. I’m just enjoying the dark with the sparkle of Christmas on the horizon made brighter for the deepness of the night. The Slovenian mythology is enticing me as the light is balanced with the dark. The world is both light and dark in balance, as in yin/yang (Picture “Ornamental Bronze Plaque, Celtic Horse-gear, Santon, Norfolk (Detail)” by Gun Powder Ma – Own work. I’m also thinking of all the dark things I really like – dark chocolate, deep water, the deep brown eyes and skin of my friends.
