When were the good old days?

The more I research history the more I realize that there weren’t good old days. In retrospect history seems much neater than it really was to live through. People didn’t know how things were going to work out. They struggled along, figuring it out as they went. All the issues that we deal with today – contentious politics, class struggles, oppression of those perceived as different, economic depression, wars, and hard to realize dreams have always been present there never was a time when life was just easy. I also realize that there were joys, and perhaps the qualitative difference in the joys of the past is what makes us long for a past that seems better.

I tried to write ‘Longing for Home’ in a way that showed the hardships and the joys of a particular time in history. Having the story in a different time allowed me to explore the characteristics of people that remain the same across history. I loved my characters and I hope you will too.
