I have lived places where it is cold and snowy throughout winter. When I was a kid in upstate NY we spent the winter skating and sledding and when it was really cold curled up in front of the wood stove with good books. Yes, wood stove – we didn’t have a furnace, and yes books – we didn’t watch TV. In a way I was preparing to write about life more than 100 years ago. Though I live a much more modern (and warmer winter) life now I sometimes miss the winters of my childhood.
In Slovenia they also get snow, especially in the alps. Right now in the town of Bled(picture by “Bled (8627003853)” by Daniel Thornton – Wikimedia Commons) they are having a winter festival complete with lights and music. I’m sure it is beautiful in the snow. It is no wonder that my character Irena in ‘Longing for Home’ longed for the cleanliness of winter in the mountains instead of the damp cold of Chicago.
