My Great Grandmother Margaret Corbett Koetting could cure just about any illness with tea. Maybe it is because both of her parents were Irish. When my mom was a kid any time she had a difficult day she would go to Grandma’s. The Koettings owned three houses next to each other in Milwaukee, so it wasn’t a long walk for my Mom. Great Grandma would just say ‘Come on in and have a little cup of tea and tell me all about it.’ So my mom would and they would chat and sip until everything was better.
Great Grandma was on to something, as the healing power of tea is now recognized by science. The healing power of Grandmas is also pretty well recognized. I must admit to believing in tea. I drink it by the gallon, hot, even in the middle of summer. I’m not alone in this – Captain Picard of Star trek was well known for ‘Earl Gray – Hot’.
And tea saved Dr. Who when he was regenerating. |
Of course Great Grandma wasn’t an utter fool. When tea didn’t work she would add a shot of whiskey to the tea. My mother thought nothing of getting a shot of whisky as a medicinal toddy. Here a a few more pictures of Great Grandma. Looking at these pictures I know why my mother’s cousins called her ‘Little Grandma’. I included the picture with Kevin because the story is that my mother put him in Grandma’s lap for a picture. She had dementia and she wasn’t pleased to have a baby on her lap. She kept saying ‘Somebody take this child from me please’. |
