Traditional Slovenian Cuisine

I did not know my grandmother well, and though I met my great grandmother, she was old by the time I was born. Since I didn’t live near family I did not grow up with any traditional Slovenian foods. When I was a teenager my grandmother came to visit and taught us how to make potica. Potica is a wonderful Slovenian bread that I still make at Christmas. Lately I’ve been researching everyday traditional Slovenian meals. I’ve found some recipes on http://www.slovenia.si/visit/cuisine/recipes/. My great grandmother said that when she lived at home they rarely ate meat. As far as I can tell that is true for most poor people in the 1800’s. Meat was just too expensive for everyday meals. I found recipes for dishes with buckwheat and vegetables such as cabbage and beets. Those are all things that I like, so I am going to try out some dishes over the next few weeks and will keep you informed how it goes. There are also tons of baked goods that look fabulous, but really, I need to fit into my jeans, so those will be rare treats. Anyone have any suggestions about specific dishes I should try?
